Announcing the Top Ten Scottish App Stars #SAS30 | 10-1

20th February 2017

As Scotland’s largest mobile app development and IoT company, Waracle enjoy seeing other Scottish companies have great success with mobile apps.  Moreover, we know that there’s considerable tech talent in Scotland especially in many sectors which are now technology driven.  In fact, we’re researching Scottish apps in order to satisfy our own nerdy fascination with mobile apps. Our initial research brings the first edition of the Scottish App Stars 30 (#SAS30). We’ve already announced the #SAS30 apps in 30-21 and 20-11. So, this week, we bring you the top ten Scottish App Stars including special recognition for the top three apps.

Where are these companies in Scotland?

Of course many Glasgow companies feature. It’s no surprise that the majority of the companies with apps are headquartered in Edinburgh, especially with the startup incubator Codebase supporting the development of many of the country’s technology companies and CodeClan and The DataLab helping skill the population. Kudos must go to Jamie Coleman, Owner and Chairman of Codebase for creating this tech incubator since almost 20% of the #SAS30 apps are a result of Codebase companies.  As the Scottish Government knows, Scotland certainly has its fair share of ambitious entrepreneurs.  Similarly, a lot of the companies are also part of ScotlandIS, the trade body for Scotland’s ICT industry, and Technology Scotland developing the Key Enabling Technology (KET) sectors in Scotland.

So, here’s the bit you’ve been waiting for, in alphabetical order, the top ten Scottish App Stars!

How does an app feature in the Scottish App Stars 30 Chart?

The Scottish App Stars 30 is based on our app store research for companies with apps who have their corporate headquarters in Scotland.  App performance is strongly linked to having a concentrated focus on App Store Optimisation (ASO) and app marketing resulting in good ratings and reviews. The apps in the Scottish App Stars have all had a large number of installs. Consequently, they’re ranking well for their keywords, and compared to competitor apps.  They have good app store listings which include relevant screenshots.  Ultimately, they’re consistent across both Apple App Store and Google Play Store and they receive a strong number of reviews and ratings.

Is your app omitted?

With millions of mobile apps in the app stores, there will be plenty additional apps which are not in the top 30 and that’s understandable.  If you think there are omissions, then give us a shout and draw it to our attention!  Scottish App Stars 30 is new and will be regularly updated so there’s every chance your app could grab a future spot if you contact us!

Why is it important to focus on ASO?

Getting an app discovered is one of the biggest issues facing mobile app marketers today. You can own an amazing app from the best mobile app developer in the land, but you need to make sure it’s discovered. It needs to be known for its benefits to drive installation.  There are lots of techniques when it comes to app marketing. One very important technique guaranteed to generate more app downloads is App Store Optimisation or, ASO, as we like to call it!  ASO is quite simply a way of optimising mobile apps to rank higher in app store search results and therefore be more visible to potential downloaders.

Search, in app stores, is the most used method for discovering and downloading new mobile apps. Basically, if you don’t use ASO to increase your app’s search ranking, you’re ignoring the largest discovery channel available to your app. It’s estimated that 63% of all apps are discovered via the app store search function, or via browsing the app store (App Tweak).
